Qua Petroleum Refinery Project
Qua Petroleum Refinery Limited was established on 10 April 1996 with registration number RC 290962, under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The company is promoted by a group of Nigerian businessmen with experience in lifting Nigerian crude oil since the 1970s who now wish to realize their ambition of diversification into the key strategic investment area of petroleum products refining. To this end, a licence to construct an export oriented refinery was granted by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Petroleum Resources on 5 December 1996. The licence, which is still valid, is being put through the Approval To Construct (APC) process as required by the Directorate of Petroleum Resources (DPR).
The refinery is being established to exploit the higher yield attraction of the Nigerian light crude with its low sulphur content which is in high demand in international markets; and also to capitalize on the proximity of the refinery’s location to a ready supply of crude oil and skilled local labour.
The project is for the development of an initial 100,000 barrels per stream day export oriented refinery, with further expansion to 200,000 barrels per stream day, to service the ever increasing demand for refined petroleum products worldwide.
There is a further plan to construct a 10 million ton capacity plant to process both LNG and other petrochemicals (methanol, urea and mixed alcohol). This plant will utilise the abundant natural gas stock which is currently being flared by the major oil producing companies in Nigeria. In addition, the company plans to explore the development of both marginal oil fields and deep off-shore blocks within the next five years as a self sustaining strategy with respect to the supply of feedstock.
